The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde.
Is wonderfully enthralling. Yet it can be hard to understand, or even follow. I have had to go back and read what I have already read before I understand what was to happen in that scene. Dorian Gray is very much a character to catch you off guard.
As he sits to be painted by Basil. You can see that he is very gentle and very much intrigued by Harry's talks of life and such. He becomes very close to Harry very quickly. It makes me wonder if Oscar Wilde had intended for Dorian Gray to be a fast paced character in a slow book, to keep the reader. Wanting more or if to portray his youthful beauty?
Once Dorian starts to explore the world around he finds Sibyl Vane and falls very much in love with her acting and very quickly becomes engaged to her. he invites Basil and Harry to see her act. I don’t see how he can fall in love with her so quickly. He has only seen her as she acts on a stage. Not who she is behind the costume or part she is given. Which makes me wonder is he more in the wanting to be her agent.
And make her into an acting star. Then love her as his wife and she as his husband? Her brother, James as he prepares to leave for Australia. Tells Sibyl if her “lover” ever does her wrong he will kill him. Could he possibly serious? Would he hurt his sister with the feelings she has let open up inside her?
